The Nigella Diaries – Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cake

I probably should say at the outset that I’m not much of a fan of chocolate cake. But then, I’m not much of a fan of either chocolate or cake. When it comes to the former, I’m perfectly happy with a couple of squares of really dark, bitter chocolate, and when it comes to the latter, well, while I bake it, I rarely eat it.

Having said that, it was hubby’s birthday on Monday and a birthday requires a cake – and nothing says birthday cake more than a double-layered chocolate cake does. So that’s what I baked him.

Just as I’m not big on cakes, I also tend to avoid anything that requires icing and decorating, but, as I said, this was a birthday cake, so off I went to the supermarket for candles and these little sugar heart thingies.

As for the recipe itself? It’s from “Feast” but Nigella has kindly uploaded it to her website – you’ll find it here – and it’s an absolute doddle. All the ingredients are brought to room temperature and then tipped into the food processor. A bit of a whizz around and hey presto cake batter. The same goes for the icing. The hardest part is the washing up – I hate washing up the food processor. Hey ho.

I’ve taken on the challenge to cook my way through Nigella Lawson’s cookbooks. You can find other episodes here.
